Prospective

A Note To Prospective Students

Dear Prospective Students,

Thank you so much for your inquiry about the Ph.D. in Public Administration and Management at the University of North Texas (UNT). For your information, the Public Administration and Management Program (PADM) is located in the Department of Public Administration in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service (PACS). The mission of the Ph.D. program is to prepare scholars who are dedicated to creating and disseminating new knowledge and to advancing the study and practice of public administration.

Although our Ph.D. program was initiated in 2005, faculty members teaching at the doctoral level have a long history of excellence. For example, our masters degree is ranked 10th in the nation in local government management. Our undergraduate degree in emergency management is the first and most prestigious in the world. Students in the Ph.D. program have also distinguished themselves academically. Many have already published books and articles, presented papers at academic conferences, and obtained or managed research grants.

Please note a few of the reasons why our program is quickly developing a strong reputation among those seeking a Ph.D. in public administration:

  • instruction from knowledgeable and renown scholars
  • research opportunities in local government management, human resources, financial management, non-profit management, emergency management, etc.
  • teaching prospects in undergraduate programs
  • scholarships or funding from NSF grants and other sources

When applying to the program, please send your official transcripts and GRE scores to the graduate school. The other materials such as the personal statement, resume, and letters of recommendation should be sent directly to me. International students should contact the International Students Office for additional details about language requirements and I-20s.

In terms of scholarships, we have several options. First, there are some university scholarships for $5,000 or $20,000, and they are given on a competitive basis. Strong students are nominated for these awards by faculty. Second, we have a few TA/TF positions available for incoming and continuing students. If you interested in these positions, you should fill out an application which is located on our website. Faculty members make decisions on these applications. Finally, all PhD students who enter in Fall 2008 will be given a scholarship on a first come first serve basis (when funds run out, the scholarship will cease).

If you have any other questions about the program, or would like to discuss your individual academic needs, please contact me at (940) 565-2318 or Brian.Collins@unt.edu. We would be honored to help you reach your academic goals.

Best regards,
