PACS has a long history of providing professional development to practitioners in our disciplines. In fact, several of the Departments first began as Centers in the late 60’s that were funded to offer state-of-the art professional development to practitioners in the newly developing fields of gerontology, rehabilitation, and mediation.
Today, there are many programs that provide continuing education to professionals in a variety of disciplines:
Behavior Analysis:
The online courses in Behavior Analysis were designed to meet the needs of human service professionals and other individuals who do not have access to a university that offers a curriculum in behavior analysis or who cannot meet the scheduling requirements of on-campus courses. These courses cover ONLY the academic component of the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB) requirements to apply for certification as a behavior analyst (for those with an advanced degree) or as an associate behavior analyst (for those with a bachelors degree). Professionals can take courses directly from the Behavior Analysis Department and receive a Certificate of Mastery Level for each completed course, in lieu of a transcript. This is accepted for BACB certifications.
Criminal Justice:
The W.W. Caruth Jr. Police Institute at Dallas (CPI) was created by a primary partnership between the Dallas Police Department and the University of North Texas - Dallas Campus in 2008. The main campus of the University of North Texas, including the Department of Criminal Justice, provides support, and an affiliated relationship is maintained with the University of Texas at Dallas. The founding executive director of the Institute is Dr. Robert W. Taylor, PhD, former Chair of the UNT Department of Criminal Justice.
The Institute was funded with an initial grant of $9.5 million from the Communities Foundation of Texas, and focuses on fulfilling the complex research, career advancement and leadership development needs of the Dallas Police Department. Caruth Police Institute also utilizes the unique expertise and vast knowledge base among the faculty at the Department of Criminal Justice to assist in the design and delivery of professional development curriculum used at the Dallas Police Department, and to establish its position as a national resource for innovative strategies in policing. This venture signifies a bold new relationship between universities and major police departments characterized by cutting-edge research, education, and professional development services.
Gerontology:
The mission of the Coalition for Leadership in Aging Services (CLAS) is to provide education for leaders who can expand and create innovative service options for the aging. Certified Aging Services Professional (CASP) is a national professional certification program for aging professionals. CASP certification serves as the foundation for the professional activities offered by CLAS. The program is designed to educate and train professionals involved in the management involved in assisted living facilities, continuing care retirement communities, senior housing, and other types of aging services. CASPs’ unique and comprehensive approach provides facility and program administrators with the flexibility and marketability to work in a variety of settings throughout their careers.
Public Administration:
The Center for Public Management (CPM) is the professional development arm of the Department of Public Administration at the University of North Texas. The mission of the Center is to provide timely and relevant training to public sector professionals.
Rehabilitation:
University of North Texas' Workplace Inclusion & Sustainable Employment (UNTWISE) delivers information, continuing education, and technical assistance in areas that affect the employment and inclusion of individuals with disabilities. Utilizing a variety of delivery systems, from face-to-face training to distance-learning technologies, UNTWISE keeps vocational rehabilitation practitioners and managers abreast of the latest trends, best practices, and research. We have a track-record of success that we are proud to acknowledge including the RSA Commissioner's Award for Excellence in Education and Training.
Volunteerism:
The Educational Consortium for Volunteerism offers continuing education for volunteer managers and other non-profit professionals through LEAD (lifelong education @ your desktop).
Volunteer Management:
The Educational Consortium for Volunteerism, a special initiative whose mission is to enhance professional volunteer management and foster more effective volunteerism through university support, offers online continuing education for volunteer managers and other nonprofit professionals. The courses are authored by professionals in the field, self-paced, and short in length. Additional information and registration for the courses can be found at Lifelong Education @ Desktop through UNT’s Center for Achievement and Lifelong Learning. The Consortium also offers professional development opportunities for community leaders through face-to-face presentations on topics such as board development, human resource management, boomer and senior volunteers, and others.
