Minors
Addictions**
The Addiction minor prepares students to become alcohol/drug abuse counselors and is a great compliment to many social science majors. The certificate in Substance Abuse Treatment is designed for busy professionals already working in the field who want to upgrade their skills. The certificate can be obtained by successfully completing 12 semester credit hours.
Alternative Dispute Resolution**
Applied Economics offers an interdisciplinary minor in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) ADR practice is a rapidly growing field that is seen as a preferred alternative to litigation and violence. In addition to the minor, the department offers three separate professional certificates in mediation, family mediation, and alternative dispute resolution.
Ethnic Studies
Ethnic studies provide students with an understanding of the complex issues surrounding racial and cultural differences in the United States. Students gain insights into the historical, political, social and popular aspects of ethnicity and will develop an informed view of how and why race continues to shape social reality in the United States.
Human Services
The human service minor prepares students to work in various human service agencies to help others achieve their maximum potential. There is a high demand for trained Human Service professionals in many settings including non-profit agencies, State, or Federal agencies.
Medical Anthropology
A minor in Medical Anthropology trains future anthropologists, physicians, nurses, PA’s, and other health professionals to understand the complex relationships that exist between social, cultural, psychological, biological, economic, and environmental determinants and health, to compare how contemporary health services are organized, and to understand the current place and function of complementary and alternative therapies in society.
Public Administration
In addition to the B.S. degree in emergency administration and planning (EADP), public administration offers a minor for undergraduate students. This minor strengthens many UNT degree programs by providing an overview of management and fiscal functions.
Volunteer and Community Resource Management**
A 12 semester credit hours certificate program that is the only one in the U.S. based on full-length for-credit college courses and is available entirely on-line. It is endorsed by the Association for Volunteer Administration, the premier professional organization for volunteer and community-based leaders in the country. The certificate can be earned as a part of an 18 semester credit hours minor in Volunteer and Community Resource Management.
