In the BAAS program, a student's major is "Applied Arts and Sciences" - unlike other degree types where it consists of a single discipline such as management or sociology. The BAAS major consists of themes or concentrations which enhance a student's professional development and are sourced by courses from multiple disciplines. Students may build on occupationally specific courses already taken at a community college or in the military or take other related courses to form concentrations.

  Professional Development Concentration Requirements:

    • Completion of three interdisciplinary concentrations of
courses consisting of 12 hours per concentration.

    • Two (24 hours) concentrations must be taken from
departments in the College of Public Affairs and
       Community Service (PACS).

    • The third concentration may come from any other department
at UNT or may consist of technical/professional
coursework already completed at a community college (or in
the military) as part of an associate's degree.

Students are best served by selecting professional development concentrations which work together to satisfy future career needs or objectives. For example, a student who has an associate's degree in business management and who is interested in careers in the non-profit sector might choose concentrations in Business, Volunteer Management, and in Applied Gerontology. Developing expertise in these areas would enhance the student's future marketability to non-profit organizations which deal with elderly people.
