About Us
Welcome to the College of Public Affairs and Community Service (PACS)! You’ve made a wise decision to join a College that has definitely made an impact on the university and the community it serves. The College prides itself in being student focused and community oriented, with applied research that is on the cutting edge.
The College began in the early 70’s as the School of Community Service. It had its roots in an entrepreneurial spirit focused on research and service, primarily in the Social Sciences. In just over 30 years, it has grown to over 2,400 undergraduate and graduate students making it the fourth largest academic unit in the university. It has eight academic departments offering nine bachelor degree programs, ten masters programs, and three Ph.D. programs.
Here are just a few facts about the College that we think makes us unique:
- PACS leads the university in the percentage of African-American (19.3%) and Hispanic (8.7%) students and 22% of its faculty are African-American or Hispanic
- PACS is a pioneer in distributed learning, currently offering over 68 web-based courses, one fully online master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling, and an online certificate in volunteer management. Plans are underway to develop an online bachelor’s degree in Applied Arts and Sciences.
- PACS is committed to international education, having supported studies abroad programs in Mexico, Israel, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia.
- PACS values the concept of science to service as evident by the fact that virtually all degree programs have some type of service learning or internship requirement.
- PACS established the Service Learning Center and American Humanics as evidence of their commitment to applied learning.
- PACS invests in partnerships with the community – last year more than 400 partnerships with external agencies and programs were documented.
- PACS ranks second in the university in per capita faculty productivity for external-sponsored programs.
We welcome you to the community of scholars and professionals who are dedicated to making a difference. We hope your journey is productive, fun and meaningful! You are the future generation of PACS alumni and we trust that you take advantage of all the opportunities UNT and PACS offers.
